Decorative and durable glass with a beautifully shaped surface reminiscent of carved wood. Perfect for juice during the summer party or a refreshing beverage after a hot sauna bath.
Designer thoughts
Designer Henrik Preutz
“When I closed my eyes and let my mind wander to a Scandinavian summer evening, I saw a crackling fire and a sauna by a lake where the wind rippled the surface while reflecting the midnight sun in the crystal-clear water. In this moment, I put my pen to paper and created BASTUA glass with proportions that look like firewood. I hope you like the irregular facet pattern where light refracts, like on a diamond, and turns the glass into a little jewel on your dining table.”
Form/Design process
BASTUA – sauna isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling
Inspired by nature and the self-care rituals of Nordic sauna culture, the BASTUA collection combines IKEA home furnishing knowledge with Marimekko’s iconic print design in products for wellbeing inside and outside the home, made from simple, natural materials. It’s a collaboration with a truly Nordic spirit, offering a shared opportunity to live boldly, joyfully and well. What’s more, this is the first time that Marimekko has ever designed patterns especially for a collaboration.
Material
What is glass?
Glass is mainly made of sand, soda and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.
